Banned Ingredients
At L’ATELIER GREEN PARIS, we believe that beauty should be safe and make you feel confident.
Our products are 25-Free and are made with integrity, deliver fantastic results, and are free from harmful ingredients to protect/respect your body and our planet.
According to recent studies, some of these harmful substances in nail polish can pass through the nails and reach our metabolism. Moreover, these substances are also volatile and we breathe them in as well as those around us.
Here is the list of some of the 25 ingredients you will NEVER find in our products !
Animal-Derived Ingredients
L’Atelier Green does NOT make animal tested products in our collection (and it will always be!).
Dibutyl phthalate (dibutyl phthalate, DBP)
Used as a plasticizer in some nail care products, which improves the texture and hold of varnishes. DBP is an endocrine disruptor, suspected reproductive toxicant and has been linked to cancer. Harmful to fish and other wildlife. Good news, however, this phthalate is banned in cosmetics, including nail polish, by the European Union (but not in some American states). To flee!
L’Atelier Green replaced it with sorbitol, a biosource plasticizer (potato)
Toluene (Methylbenzene, toluol)
Petrochemical solvent to make the varnish more fluid. This irritant solvent can cause headaches and is harmful to the fœtus, it is a carcinogen and neurotoxicant, capable of attacking the nervous system. To flee too!
L’Atelier Green has replaced it with biosource solvents: ethyl acetate (sugar cane) and butyl acetate (cassava)
Formaldehyde
Preservative, it is used as a hardener in nail polish, but it is a known carcinogen in addition to being allergenic and unfortunately not only. It is also found in certain hardening "care" varnishes. It can cause irritation to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract.
L’Atelier Green has replaced it with sorbitol, a bio-sourced plasticizer (potato).
Formaldehyde Resin
This is a derivative of Formaldehyde, mainly used in the production of coatings and adhesives. It is not as toxic as Formaldehyde but can be an allergen.
L’Atelier Green has replaced it with sorbitol, a bio-sourced plasticizer (potato).
Xylene (Other names: dimethylbenzene, methyl toluene or xylol)
This solvent uses what makes the nail polish less sticky. Classified as an endocrine disruptor, it is linked among other things to effects on immune and reproductive functions. It may cause eye, skin or lung irritation, but also has a harmful effect on the nervous system. To avoid!
L’Atelier Green has replaced it with bio-sourced solvents: ethyl acetate (sugar cane) and butyl acetate (cassava)
Camphor
A very irritating substance. This fabric softener is an endocrine disruptor, and is also dangerous for the nervous system. This chemical acts as a cover on your nails, depriving them of nutrients and causing yellow staining on your nails. You must avoid inhaling it.
L’Atelier Green has replaced it with sorbitol, a bio-sourced plasticizer (potato).
Ethyl tosylamide
It's a film-forming plasticizer. It helps make nail polish flexible and durable, and also helps improve how well the polish sticks to the nail.. Normally banned from cosmetics in Europe, It is composed of toluene. And toluene has been shown to be a potent neurotoxin that can cause neurological damage, impaired breathing, hearing loss, reduced brain function, etc.
L’Atelier Green has replaced it with sorbitol, a bio-sourced plasticizer (potato)
Triphenyl phosphate (TPHP)
It is widely used as a replacement for DBP as a plasticizer, but studies have pinpointed it as an endocrine disruptor that is bad for reproduction. What is worrying is that it enters the body, as shown by this study, which found residues in the urine of volunteers, after they applied nail polish that contained it.
L’Atelier Green has replaced it with sorbitol, a bio-sourced plasticizer (potato)
Parabens
Used in a variety of cosmetics as preservatives. Suspected endocrine disrupters and may interfere with male reproductive functions and more.
L’Atelier Green has replaced it with non denatured wheat alcohol.
Benzophenones
These UV filters protect the varnishes from the sun's rays in the bottle. But they are allergenic! Studies have shown that they also have an endocrine disrupting effect. We would rather do without!
L’Atelier Green uses the vitamin E (tocopherol) found in sunflower oil.
Nickel
The small beads at the bottom of nail polish bottles are generally made from an alloy incorporating nickel which is a strong allergen that easily penetrates the skin.
L’Atelier Green doesn't add beads in their bottles.
Styrene
Is a monomer, an endocrine disruptor, toxic and irritant, which should not be breathed, and which is carcinogenic. There may be traces of it in the varnishes - and sometimes it is used as an ingredient and is therefore mentioned in the composition.
L’Atelier Green has replaced it with partly bio-sourced oligomers found in corn, wheat and potatoes.
Monomer
This molecule is an irritant small enough to penetrate the barrier of even healthy skin.
L’Atelier Green uses oligomers which do not penetrate the body.
